When it comes to windows, most people only notice a problem when there’s a noticeable crack or break. Often, we neglect our windows until it’s too late.

If you’re unsure as to whether or not your windows need to be replaced, here are some common ailments that may have gone unnoticed for quite some time:

Fractured or cracked glass: This is the most obvious one to look for. Is there broken glass on the outside or inside of your window’s panes? If you notice even the tiniest crack, it’s time to get your windows replaced. What starts out as a small fracture can morph into a huge crack in very little time. This can mean losing heat in the winter and losing cool air in the summer, which can lead to increased energy bills.

Dirt that appears permanent: Your windows have stains that just won’t budge. After trying different window cleaners and scrubbing thoroughly, this dirt still seems to be there. Rest assured, it’s not you- it’s your old windows! If you’re having trouble cleaning your windows and removing certain blemishes, it’s time for a replacement - either the entire window or possibly just the Insulated Glass Unit

Too much air: If you feel air coming through your windows when they’re closed, they will need to be replaced. However, before you pick out new windows, inspect the weatherstripping because the draft may be caused by damaged seals. Additionally - if your windows are relatively new, check your warranty. This is often an issue that’s covered at no cost to you with a reputable manufacturer..

Excess fog: If you can’t see through your windows due to an overload of fog, you likely need a replacement. Moisture can collect inside the window’s panes where it can’t be wiped away. This is due to a break in the seal, causing the gas in between to escape and air to be allowed in. What does this mean for you? Well, essentially your double- or triple-pane windows will now be working only as well as single-pane windows. The Insulated Glass Unit or possibly the entire window will need to be replaced to keep down energy costs throughout the year.

Opening and Closing: If you have trouble opening and closing your windows, it could be time to replace them. This is especially common with wooden windows because the materials can warp and swell over time. Vinyl windows offer the best defense against the elements.

Age: If you have a window that’s over 15 years of age, chances are you should have it replaced. The windows performance has most likely decreased (especially compared to modern standards), and it’s physical appearance may have started to chip, scuff and deteriorate. New replacement windows can provide an upgrade in both design and performance, helping seal out sounds of nature, traffic, and other exterior noises.

If you think it's time to replace your windows, we'd love to help you!
